Screencraft Writing Fellowship
"There are quite a few emotional moments in the script; one of them is Theodore's untimely death. The scene where Bella has to toss Theo into the waters is shattering. The plot is riddled with exciting action sequences; the bit where Mary and Francois engage in hand-to-hand combat is superbly daunting. It's safe to say that the pilot delivers what it promises, striking the perfect balance between entertainment and emotion."
Jumpstart
"Overall, Belladonna has solid pacing, trackable story beats, a compelling protagonist, and fantastic world-building. The setup provides ample room for a series following an adventurous young woman who dreams of becoming a pirate, delivering a classic underdog tale rife with action. The action and pacing flow naturally. There are numerous, easily identifiable subplots that do not detract from the primary storyline. The Writer shows a strong voice and potential in the genre."
Scriptapalooza
"This script presents us with an amazingly rendered and detailed world where we’d love to spend time. It is brutal, violent, and yet not without whimsy and heart. Once Mary and Bella are stuck aboard the Envisage, we’re quickly endeared to this unlikely friendship of zany and yet scary pirates who are immediately likeable, and yet, at any moment can turn into monsters. The conflict is apparent right away, and not only from the political establishment and the English navy, nor only from Kilborn’s pirates, nor even from Virginia’s pirates, but even between Mary and Bella, who bicker just the right amount. Ultimately, despite its historical and adventurous foil, this is the story of two sisters who have different worldviews and priorities: one is conservative and wants to do what’s right, the other is rebellious and pines for adventure. This makes for a relatable and human story with dramatic and action-packed trappings."
